I have never asked my doctor but guessing from the nutrition classes sugar is fine, which is the wrong answer.

Lots of utube videos out there that say no sugar which is what I am doing. Real limits the food I eat so it is basically plant based and beans, doing fine.

Nothing but I do try to limit it as much as I can. I like sweets. Its a struggle but I want to live healthier. Eating some sweet fruit is better than a cookie. Also try less bad carbs.

My doc said building energy and strength was most important during treatment and to eat ANYTHING I wanted. He said I needed the calories to fight the cancer and side effects. He said I could eat healthy later. I lost only 2 lbs the entire time and felt good enough to drive myself to all my appointments. I had stage 3b but am 2+ yrs stable and read below...

From Mayo Clinic Study:

Myth: People with cancer shouldn't eat sugar, since it can cause cancer to grow faster.

Fact: Sugar doesn't make cancer grow faster. All cells, including cancer cells, depend on blood sugar (glucose) for energy. But giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn't speed their growth. Likewise, depriving cancer cells of sugar doesn't slow their growth.

This misconception may be based in part on a misunderstanding of positron emission tomography (PET) scans, which use a small amount of radioactive tracer — typically a form of glucose. All tissues in your body absorb some of this tracer, but tissues that are using more energy — including cancer cells — absorb greater amounts. For this reason, some people have concluded that cancer cells grow faster on sugar. But this isn't true.

I think over all too much sugar is unhealthy.

Carla Fraser 3 years

I didn't say - nor does this study to over-indulge. It just says it's ok and not going to make it worse. The point is, if nothing appeals to you but a chocolate shake - IT'S ALRIGHT. The calories are what's important to keep your strength up. I had my share of sugars, carbs, red meat - all those things that are falsely accused of be bad for cancer patients and survived and plan on surviving for another 20 years! Best wishes for you and yours!

Thank you for sharing this. I just read same thing but get so tired of explaining this.

I just hate reading posts where the caregiver "can't understand why 'mom' keeps losing weight - I don't understand we are giving her the healthiest diet" - when 'mom' is at her most vulnerable point and needs to be building energy.... But people want to believe everything they see on the internet. This past election should have convinced them that's not always true!!

Cheri Walsh 3 years

So very true

Joyce Honeycutt 3 years

I asked the Dietician when she called me to chat. She said it was a myth, but thought everything in moderation was a good call. We also talked about Red Meat. She said again it is fine in moderation. She said the Medeterrainian Diet was a great Diet for Cancer Patients as long as you don't loose weight on it.

Cancer loves sugar

So does your brain and kidneys. That’s why they light up on a Pet. Too much sugar is not good for anybody. A moderate amount won’t hurt you

Mine have no problem with it. Eat what I want.

Its a difficult subject and oncologists will in most cases dismiss sugar being an issue.

We all need sugar but the problem is excess sugar and how the body deals with it.
9 teaspoons a day is recommended but most of us consume way more than that at breakfast.
There is too much evidence on it and alkalinity/ ph to ignore it.
Moderation is the word but most people dont understand how much sugar is in the foods we consume and think are safe. Its a lifestyle choice but it requires you to look at whats in your daily intake and the sugar amount is crazy.
My diet of which i thought was ok was over 10 times the amount on average per day.

I am beginning chemo on tuesday but have changed my diet and adjusted my ph level with safe bi carb soda to give me the best chance.
Look into it before you discount it. You owe it to yourself and family .
Cheers.

Def agree. All. İn moderation. Alkalinity and ph is huge. Its saving my sons life

Stephanie Hendricks 3 years

Yes steph If only people would loom into it more. Its scary what we are doing and so easy to fix.

Russell Swift 3 years

Plus natural sugars are all a body needs. All thus processed shit jus adds to bad acidity

Stephanie Hendricks 3 years

Plus high thc oils shrunk my sons tumors down to half the size in the first 20 days of use. 1ml capsule of high thc before bed. Alkanized water. Fruits veg and less red meat. We are 3 months in with chemo

Stephanie Hendricks 3 years

Good luck with your recovery

One has to be careful and get enough sugar. All mammals, including us truly, relies heavily on sugar as a source of energy for nerve cells. This is both the ones in our peripheral nerves and the ones in the brain. So completely starving ones self of sugar is not going to work. All cells can make use of glucose in a process that was called the Kreb's cycle in my college days but has since been renamed the citric acid cycle. Also if your sugar drops below a certain level our liver will start to produce it with various methods. I am not saying you should just sit around and eat ice cream and chocolate donuts constantly but trying to starve a malignancy out by depleting it of sugar is not going to work. Your other cells all need it to, including the ones in your immune system. Look I am not a biologist, I have a PhD. İn computer engineering but I took some biology and biochem courses in my time so I know this much. Consult your nutritionist or doctor and ask them how to adjust your diet instead of just flying off and trying different things. You don't want to inadvertently harm your bodies ability to fight the C.

I believe its a myth, we would get cancer all of our life if it were true.

Real sugar is made from cane. Also fruit is real sugar

Use Stevia. It’s better.

Look. Up acidity and alkalinity in the body. Waters. Fruits veg and fake sugars and red meat. Alll a huge factor when dealing with cancer. U want your. Body to be a bad host for cancer not a prime one.

In moderationis fine. But like any diet or diease he told me.. Sugar or grease or salt is bad for anyone .

The results of a 9 year medical study into the Warburg effect (how cancer cells use sugar) were published in October 2017. For the first time scientists have definitively shown how cancer cells utilize sugar to grow differently to other cells. Despite this breakthrough finding much more research is needed into understanding how this information can be utilized to find new treatment methods. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171013103623.htm

I have a mutation of my Fumarate Hydratase gene which is the seventh step of the Krebs cycle. My mutation causes me to grow tumors and one was a Pheochromocytoma. I was told by one of m doctors at NIH that sugar is poison for me.

Jo Parker Yang 3 years

I think it's a fascinating medical breakthrough. I just hope that further research can be done on an urgent basis to help us to better understand how to exploit this relationship and effectively starve the cancer into submission.

Sam Mckenna 3 years

Sam Mckenna, some of us with my mutation and other Krebs Cycle mutations go onto a Ketogenic Diet to do just that!

All cells use sugar, not just cancer cells. They basically take two glucose molecules and through a complex set of biochemical reactions create fuel for a cell called Adenosine Tri-Phosphate, or ATP for short. This ATP is used for the cells to perform the various things they do. Yes cancer cells absorb sugar and metabolize it for energy, but so does every other cell in the human body.

James Staton

The body can turn most everything you eat into glucose, so trying to limit sugar ( a type of glucose) is as they say on Star Trek futile

Everything in moderation. That there’s no scientific proof that sugar will cause your cancer to grow or spread. But don’t be a sugarholic.

Angela Hannah

Mine told me to eat what ever i can tolerate

My oncologist says that there is nothing to support that claim. When I was going through chemo I was told that I needed calories. They had snacks and drinks for us. Aspartame is much worse than real sugar. I’m not a doctor but I have survived 17 years so I trust my doctors more than the internet.

Joan Krause
J

What stage was your cancer, that you have survived 17 years? That is awesome!!

Sheri Hood 3 years

I was stage 2 and had the upper right lobe removed in 2001. In 2013 I was diagnosed with a totally different lung cancer in my left lung. I was stage 2b. I had a resection, chemo, and radiation. I have actually survived nsclc twice. 17 years total. It will be 5 years in October for the left lung. I just had my CT scan and it was clean. I am living proof that lung cancer can be beat. Stay positive!

Joan Krause 3 years

It’s important to have regular check ups. My second cancer was found with a normal chest X-ray. I now get a CT scan every year and blood work every six months. Don’t skip those check ups!

Joan Krause 3 years

Brain MRIs will become common. I had vertigo awhile back. The doc gave me meds and then sent me for a brain MRI as a precaution.

Joan Krause 3 years

Thats great! You are an inspiration. I am stage 4 nsclc adenocarcinoma. DX around Christmas. I'm devastated and scared out of my mind. Had one Keytruda so far. Get my next one next Friday.

Almost anything in excess is bad for you. Try to make good decisions with what you eat and drink, but don't go to extremes and for goodness sakes do not deprive yourself of something you want.
