Went to Dr. Today. They want me to start Prolia for osteoporosis. But I am only 35... Not sure what I am feeling right now. Anyone have experience with that drug?
Taking Evista had luck with and no side effects
What are your z-scores?
I have had three Prolia shots so far and no side effects waiting to get a new dexascan next summer to see if they are working.
Thank you for letting me know Laurette! I pray that things get better!
What is your history and diet like, do you get healthy fat and protein or restrict like most females. Diet could be a large answer.
I'm 67 and my doctor wants me on prolia too. I'm very apprehensive about taking it. I've taken all the rest. First Fosamax then Evista then actenol then reclast. They all work for a while and then not. I haven't heard anything good about prolia except from my doctor. Is there ANY ONE out there that had GOOD Results From It Without Side effects?
Mary good points. Vit D3 and K2 are so key.. Jenn you have to really did into the research drugs can wait a short while so you can determine what is right for you and only you! Will be praying for you!
There are side affects to the shot. Make sure that they give you the pamplet and tell you everything.
You're borderline osteoporotic, but your scores are not much worse than mine. Jennifer Camp Jackson. I went to the Cleveland Clinic a few weeks ago and my osteoporosis expert told me that Z-Scores higher than -2.0 are considered normal. T-Scores are different... They are for people over 50. Nevertheless, it's good that you are taking action now. I have 4 compression fractures from a seizure. If it hadn't been for that, I probably wouldn't have known that I had osteopenia until I got older. I had back surgery in March.
1 standard deviation is = to 10-12% bone loss.
Hi constance, I have a history of celiac, have been underweight for 12 years, had no periods, etc. Recently, I have been using food as medicine.... Have been steadily gaining weight (been trying for years but finally am able to gain weight) and have 13 pounds to go. Lots and lots of healthy fats, carbs and protein. Used to restrict big time in college then I came down with celiac.
Thank you Lila... Will check it out for sure. Trent, I have -2.9 in my spine. I am pretty positive that is osteoporosis....you are the first to say otherwise. I am so sorry to hear about your compression fractures. I have had some in the past too and didn't even realize it. That is crazy how much bone loss = 1 standard deviation.
Rose, I took Fosamax in my early 20s when I had osteopenia. No good. Hope you find something that works.
Thank you so very much Constance Parson... Your prayers mean more than you know. I was horribly low in D3... Started taking that along with K2 and magnesium. Doing weight training too.
I broke my femur last June. I have osterposis and ostero arthris. My Dr said the Prolia shot was a good idea. My mother is taking the shot. But I am hesitant becase of my break last year. I am also trying to get into another Dr. I have more questions to ask. I make sure to ask as many questions as posible and research the internet.
You are very wise Lila Ramey... I just get confused at times bc the more I look into things the more I seem to find conflicting viewpoints. At times it is maddening.
Jenn, wow so proud of you and praying for you as I know you can make gains with the right food, vit and weights, spend the money on a trainer vs drugs just me,
I just had my fourth on June 4. I wish I had researched this before I ever got the first. Had so may horrible side effects! I called Amgen today to find out when this toxin made from ovaries of Chinese hamsters will be out of me. Hip and back pain, heart palpitations, abnormal ekg, fatigue, vertigo, hair loss, blurry painful vision, cataracts, lower abdominal infection, operation for appendicitis, now after this last shot horrible painful rash on stomach and back and face. Hair coming out a lot now. Psoriasis and in the nails too. There is more but I think you see the drug company pushed this through after creating it in 2010 and I believe the doctors are getting a kick back to push it. I found an article where this particular pushing was called operation creep in order to have other drugs ride in on its coattails from the side effects. Look it up. This toxin is the spawn of satan. Right now I have horrible pain in my right hip, palpitations, burning itching rash on stomach and in eyebrows, burning tingling in scalp and around ears. And before this drug I had no pain at all and exercised every day but was told I had to start this or I would break my back or hip I just want all this misery to end. Tell your doctor to give it to their relatives that have osteoporosis. Bet they won't do it. Sorry this is so long but I want to warn everyone about this toxin.
Thanks, Jennifer Camp Jackson. The -2.9 Z-score or T-score would be considered osteoporosis, but the others (for your age) would not necessarily, according to my dr at CC, Bruce Long. I was surprised to hear this too, as osteoporosis (as reported by T-scores) is commonly referred to as less than -2.5, and osteopenia -1.5 to -2.5, but he said anything > -2 Z-score was in normal range, and T-Scores are irrelevant for anyone under 50. Interesting that you have celiac's. That's definitely a contributing factor.
Mary, how many shots did you have and how long after your last shot did side effects go away? I am having dental problems and am really afraid to have any work with this toxin in me with the loss of your jaw as a side effect.
I refused it.. To many reactions from ppl I know that took it... All natural for me
I am counting the days when it's gone and I can try that biodensity machine. I hope it comes to my area soon.
I just got my 5th Prolia injection on Friday. I have had no side effects as most people don't so far. My dexascan scores are better and that was done a year ago. They were terrible to begin with and I have had 4 compression fractures and never want to experience another one. Prolia stays in your body for 4 1/2 months. Hope this helps with your decision but it is really up to you. Good luck.
Thanks sue. I really don't like the idea of hanging on to old bone that may become brittle and break instead of growing new bone as bone is living tissue but I am so very glad it is working for you!
Sue Mcrae - improved how much exactly?
My spine score was -4.0 and as of a year ago it is -3.6. Hopefully it will be even better next year when I get my next dexascan.
That's pretty good.
I was very happy with it because the dexascan before that showed another fracture.
I'm surprised Forteo is not being recommended to you guys. I was told that's my only option.
I tried Forteo for 4 days. Hated the way it made me feel. It made me very anxious trying to give myself a shot every night. So I thrashed it and moved on to Prolia.
sue, were those numbers for you lumbar spine?
Thank you so much Constance; your kind words mean more than you know. It has been a battle for sure. Oh Valerie, my heart breaks for you. I pray you find some healing and aren't in horrible pain. The dr rushed me in and out of the office and didn't want to answer my questions about it but she said she takes it... I highly doubt that.
Hi Trent, thanks so much for the explanation on T scores. Yes... I never knew how celiac could be so tough on your body. When I was young it wasn't apparent but as I get older it's one thing after another. I know you can relate.
Yes karen they are my thorasic spine scores. Hip scores are -2.1.
Wow, sue that's brilliant! You must be thrilled. Have you done anything else that could have contributed to that score? Vitamin D3 and k2?
sue - please clarify. I asked if that was you lumbar spine numbers and you replied yes, they were your thoracic spine scores. They are 2 different areas. Thanks
I never heard of Prolia shots. I am 35 currently was diagnosed with Ideopathic Osteoporosis when I was 32, was on Forteo for 2 years. Significant improvement in my spine but none in Femur. My T score for spine was -2.6 in 2012 and -2.0 after completion of course in 2014. Though my femur is constant at -3.4!, it hurts a lot!!
Thanks Abhi Ogden - you're the first person I've seen who actually did forteo and reported back the results. That helps!
I look forward to it because I was supposed to start Forteo earlier this year and have been reluctant to do so… Not because I'm afraid of the side effects, but because I just don't have time right now and other health insurance issues
Yes karen that score was for my lumbar spine. There is no score for the thorasic spine. Hopefully the scores are the same for thorasic and lumbar spine.
