The difference between small cell and non small cell lung cancer

Maybe one of you can explain the difference between small cell and non small cell lung cancer to me a little better then Google and What I've heard. My understanding small cell is worse but reacts to chemo better. What does this mean? How is it worse if it reacts to treameant better and faster? I've heard that you can get better with treatment but when it comes back, it comes back in a rage!!!! Is this true?

I've been reluctant to do much research, but from what I understand small cell is much faster moving, more aggressive and that non-small cell grows at a slower pace. I'm curious to see what answers you get ...

Kim Villegas

I would love to know as well .

Gwen Winter

Kim Villegas I get that but what does that mean? If it reacts to treatment well then "when" is when it comes back? Years? Months? Weeks? I know only God knows "when" but how I'm taking it is...
Because small cell is faster growing yet reacts to treatment faster means you will basically be ok in the beginning of treatment and not so good later on and non small cell is rougher at first but chances are better toward the end. Sorry if this is confusing and somewhat straight to the point but I need to know what is happening to my mom!!!

small cell is more agressive kind of cancer that tend to spread very fast espaccialy to the brain... İts react well to chimo but still the prognosis it not good because oh its fast nature. Nscc is kind that grow slower and if you cougth it sooner the prognosis is better.. Any way the two kind have today plenty of treatment.. And lots of knoleadge.. You must be strong for your mom and we all pray that she will beo. K and healthy

Michelle I heard the same thing you did about the difference. But I also heard there are recent treatment developments for small cell. Don't remember details but make sure you are at a comprehensive cancer center and not just a hospital with cancer dept.

Alisa Murillo

I never heard that about a hospital with a cancer department which is all I have been to. Why the difference? I would really like to know. Never been to just a cancer organization or center. However the one I go to is called Sparrow Cancer Center and is hooked on to Sparrow Hospital. The one I go to follows the Mayo Clinic guidelines.

comprehensive cancers usually have more options and latest trials. I would google comprehensive cancer centers in your area and get second opinion. Good to have backup in my opinion.

Thank you

Guess mine must be pretty good when I googled comprehensive cancer centers around lansing, mi. Sparrow Cancer Center was one of the 1st that popped up

My mom has small cell lung cancer and it's also in her liver. We just found out December 7th. She has had 9 rounds of chemo. She too is inoperable as well. She seems to be doing fine. That's the part that scares me the most from what I'm hearing. She's ok! Not sick or nothing. She goes for a petscan Monday of next week to see how the cancer is reacting to the chemo. She is stage 4! It's also a worry time for us.

I have SCLC, I became ill in March 2015 and was diagnosed in July 2015. I had one tumour in the right lung and it had already travelled and set another tumour on my adrenal gland. I was given a poor prognosis without treatment (6months to 1 year) I have had 6 rounds of chemo followed by 10 days of radiation. The adrenal tumour has gone and the lung tumour has shrunk back to virtually nothing. Yes, its agressive but does respond to treatment. Yes, it can come back. The key to it is early diagnosis and treatment. Not cureable but manageble.

How are you doing? If you don't mind me asking? My mom was given a year. Its been about 5 months. And it's slowly starting to tear me apart again.

Shaylyn İvey 3 years

Just returning to my normal again after the radiation thanks, a few dietary side effects, lost my hair for a second time and fatigue but taking it a day at a time. Thanks for asking. Don't listen to the timebandits! Everyone is different. Staying as positive as you can and making the most of everyday is important. There are lots of options.

Kat Hester 3 years

Thanks. She's finished radiation a couple weeks ago. And has actually been way better since just starting chemo. She's a bit tired now. And needs to build up her endurance. But she's doing well. I just hate feeling like I'm just waiting

Shaylyn İvey 3 years

Small cell is worse even though it reacts to chemo better because it's incurable. At least extensive is. Even if chemo clears it, it will come back and will be worse. And doctors told us usually isnt treatable with chemo the second time around. However I may be wrong. That's what we were told though

My mom has small cell. Was diagnosed in September. She's finished chemo and radiation and is doing very well. So now we wait too

Shaylyn İvey

I also have SCLC stage IV non operable, treatable but not cureable, was diagnosed in September, finished 6 rounds of chemo, just got back from doing CT scan and brain MRI, will get results next tuesday. Looking at radiation next. Feeling pretty good, chemo was easy for me.

Britta Capps

Britta Capps why do you have to wait on results? Just curious. My moms gets results the same day.

Michele Lawrence

I have a doc appt next tuesday and we will discuss treatment options then also they will compare the scans with prior ones and calculate shrinkage % etc

my sister diagnosed two weeks ago and we still waiting for the biyops result.. We know that it is nscc but they want to know more so we are waiing.. Doing nothing.. My sister does not looke sick at all.. How weird this is

Pnina Olsen

Pnina Olsen my mom says she doesn't feel like she has cancer but she knows because they tell her. Her hair has thinned but she still has it after 9 rounds of treameant. It seems to be messing with our heads more then with my mom.

Michele Lawrence

She feels a little sick and weak for a few days after chemo but back up and at it after that. I can't keep up with her

Michele Lawrence

thats kind of how i was after chemo, never had nausea, just felt a lil wiped out but nothing major, and i know how your mom feels some days i'm thinking... Maybe they got it all wrong and i'm just fine lol, but i know better. Still doing pretty much everything like i used to, well except work, went on short term disab since i expected chemo to wipe me out, looking at going back soon

Britta Capps 3 years

same here..... We are waiting for the hospital to call ua for the chimo.. She did not stared yet.. The oncology was very positive and said that she has a good chance to make it through... My big mistake is i can not stop googling and it make me crasy

Pnina Olsen

I have sclc and you said everything yourself that has to do with it. It is easier to treat but usually it will come back fast and harder and hit anywhere in the body. Hard to stop and hard to treat sometimes when it comes back because it spreads so fast.
Will advise not going on google and asking your doctor or another oncologist or someone on this site. Other sites on Google are not accurate and will give you wrong advice. But as far as time and what is going to happen . .... Only God knows and has the answers.
Nsclc now has better treatments prolonging quality of life and even shrinking tumors while sclc has nothing yet ... But praying something new comes soon.

Sue Patrick
S

Pnina Olsen I'm doing the same. Sometimes I wonder who is supporting who. Me supporting my mother or my mother supporting me. Lol... I guess it works both ways. She's the one telling me not to be googling stuff and listening to everyone else.

Michele Lawrence
M

mom know best.. Listen to her becouse she is righ.. The staff we read now is old and does not revil what going on now whih all the new treatment.. The onculogic told my sister never to google.. She is not part of the statistic.. And if she have quostion to ask only him cous familly doctors dost not know nothing about nothing and they only frigthed her

Pnina Olsen I understand you just fine. Thank you for your experience. It's much needed. Certainly helped me today. All of you have. It's great to see so many others doing good. I really thought by posting this I'd get a different outcome but it all seems positive and has been very inspiring

i am here for you if you want to talk.. Ask.. Cry even.. We all in the same boat.. And someone waching us from above.. Dont worry all the time.. Take care of yourself as well and we wil be fine...... Have a wonderful week

Michelle, you got a lot of good info here. This is a great group.
Allow me to add a little advice too. Treatments for most lung cancers got a big boost these last 12 months. Things are changing (for good) very quickly, with the new immunotherapy drugs and other stuff we did not have 2 years ago. Finally research is being allowed to progress. Thus, most public information is out of date, especially statistics.

Thank you so much for all this information. You are a true warrior against the BigC. I plan, with the will of God to be around for a long time.

Is small cell usually found in later stages of cancer?
And mine was adenocarcinoma. So is that Non small cell or totally different.

Diann Starks
D

I believe adenocarcinoma is non small cell. There are only really two types of small cell. Limited and extensive.

Shaylyn İvey 3 years

Ty shaylyn, there is so much information.

Diann Starks 3 years

Actually only 1 type of small cell just 2 names great good source is from oncologist or the American Cancer Society. 3 types of nsclc

Sue Patrick 3 years

Yes I should have rephrased myself. I didn't mean type as in different. There is only one type of small cell. What our oncologist told us though is they don't diagnose in stages like others is either limited or extensive. Not sure if all doctors are like that though. We also were told limited small cell can possibly be cured in some cases while extensive cannot. Again that's just what we were told.

Shaylyn İvey 3 years

They do diagnose in stages and that is okay. Stage 1 would be operable and contained to lung

Sue Patrick 3 years

Totally different sclc and nsclc have nothing to do with any stage. Just the type of cancer that a person has
