I have been struggling with RA. I lost a lot of weight with this and I am underweight. I need advice on how I can regain some weight. I don't have dairy, I have been trying to stay off gluten, but that has been a bit tough on getting the food availability. I also have a demanding job. I need some advice on supplements I can use and possible brands (you can private message me). I was put on MTX yesterday as I have progressed really bad.
I have been wondering the same thing. I find the meds I take (Plaquenil and Sulfasalazine) have destroyed my appetite and often make me feel sick. Between the medicine and avoiding gluten, nothing tastes good any more and I lack the motivation to cook or eat. I hope the Methotrexate doesn't make matters worse for you, allissa.
Hi monica I am hoping the same with respect to Methotrexate. This is the first time on the drug and I only started yesterday. Hoping all goes well. Saying my prayers
Allissa Triplett i took this drug a month ago, and i wish if i can stop it..
Sura Lin what side effects do you have with it. I only had my first dose this weekend. I am on an eight week period
I also am under weight due to ra. Do you also have low serum iron and low hemoglobin problem?
From my last blood test about 3 weeks ago my iron, red and white blood count were good. My platelets were good.
I can definitely relate to you! I'm currently on Rituxin, arava, plaquinil, prednisone and have been gluten free for years. I've found that weight training, and low cardio workouts help put on the pounds (yoga, Piyo). Also- I don't shy away from rice or potatoes and add protein to a fruit smoothie or protein shake now and then. Hope this helps!
Thanks angie. I am hoping to stray back the weight training soon. I used to a couple years ago, but in 2016 the pain had me so down. My could barely hold anything with my wrist and my ankles were in so much pain
Allissa Triplett Ugh. I get it. That was my summer and fall. I'm slowly trying to work my way back as well. It's such a stress reliever, too. Just so hard to get it back. Good luck
thank you for your support
Hi allissa, sorry to hear about your pain and weightloss can very much empathise with that. If you tolerate nuts, this is a really good way of gaining extra calories in a healthy way. I make deliciously Ella's almond nut balls but you can make them with any nut. It's basically dates, almonds, caoca, and some almond butter. They taste really good. Also things like humous as a snack with carrot sticks, or just nit butters on gf crackers. These are a few of the things I've done when my weight was too low
I hope this helps xx
Thanks roma. I will definitely give some of these a try.
Avocados are good for gaining weight too, you could add this to a smoothie x
I love Avocados
Hi Alissa, I posted the very same thing on another forum a couple of days ago.... I was feeling low because my initial weight loss with the RA has been made worse by the methotrexate ( now due to take my fourth dose). It has given me a constant tummy upset which has prevented me from gaining any weight. I'm now only 6 and a half stone, a stone down on my pre RA weight. I'm also looking for ideas to gain weight. Someone on the other forum recommended protein shakes which are gf and dairy free. ( like you, I've given up both). I'm also on hydroxychloroquine which has affected my tummy in a similar manner. We can't win, can we?! I am doing the gym but that only seems to eat up the calories. Trying to keep off refined sugars also makes it hard to gain weight easily.
Have you tried taking Nexium or another med that helps protect the lining of the stomach.
Hi elaine, I'm also trying to stay off the refined sugars as well. I'm doing well so far keeping off the sugar and the dairy, need to try harder on the gluten. I am searching for a protein supplement that is gluten free and dairy free to give a try.
Allissa Triplett, apparently there's one called 310 Nutrition. Are you UK based? If so, I'm not sure it's available here, might only be in theU. S.. I haven't had time to look it up yet but it was recommended to me a couple of days ago. I've been told you need to keep off gluten completely for it to be effective- a little is almost as bad as a lot, apparently. It's very hard though - it's so widely used! You hear so many opinions on whether or not diet helps, but my experience is that it definitely has a role to play. Personally, I'm trying to get the RA under control with the aid of medication whilst working hard on my diet and with the aim of gradually reducing the medication but keeping the RA under control with the diet. My rheumatologist warned me that my anti ccp was so high that if I didn't start mtx asap the consequences could be serious so I felt I had no choice but I don't want to stay on it for ever if I can help it!
Kristen Boudreaux, thanks. I was taking omeprazole when I was on Celebrex but I still lost weight.
elaine- I am also on hydroxychloroquine (generic for plaquenil) and having SERIOUS stomach issues! I am Taking supplements to relieve the issues, but nothing is working. Any tips?
I make protein smoothies using collagen powder because I try to avoid soy and dairy. I use the Great Lakes brand (green can). It's tasteless and mixes in easily. I've been on weight gain smoothies because my baby has been measuring underweight. I use bananas, raw spinach, cocoa powder, honey, and a can of full-fat coconut milk (from the asian food section of the grocery store). If it's too much sugar for you, you can leave out the honey, but I like to add a lot of cocoa powder and it makes mine a bit bitter if I don't add it.
Hi danielle this sounds good. Thanks for these tips. I am enjoying all the comments so far on my post. I hope to get some more ideas.
I used Muscle Milk Gainer, it's a high calorie protein powder that athlete's use. My son recommended it when I was under 100 lbs. It's also gluten free.
Hi donna is this dairy free as well? Dairy is one of my triggers
It's says ingredients derived from milk. It's a protein powder you mix with water or milk for more calories.
Here's the nut ball recipe. Kids love this too https://deliciouslyella.com/classic-almond-and-cacao-energy-balls/
Im on the autoimmune paleo diet and had lost 15lbs and was underweight. I eat a lot of sweet potatoes (especially cooked in full fat coconut milk seems to stick to the gut more) and squashes. I went to Los Angeles recently where they have an organic coconut cream ice cream parlor called kippys. It's sweetened with raw honey and dates. I ate a bunch of ice cream and finally gained 4 pounds. You might want to try yucca/cassava fries also they are very starchy. A lot of people do well with it but it makes my hands hurt so I can't do it. Everyone is different though. I can't do butternut squash either or plantains, but a lot of people on the aip diet do well with plantains and they are good way to add some weight.
Thanks sarah. That ice cream sounds great!
That ice cream is amazing. I hadn't had any for over a year and I was able to sample almost all of their flavors! I think they have a similar place in New York too. Good luck. I hope you are feeling better soon!
Sarah Hanks thank you so much! I
Alissa, are you working with a functional medicine doctor? That is a medical doctor who practices holistic medicine.
Hi susan, I am hoping to get an appointment to see one here in Trinidad and Tobago. It's a few months wait time
I'm sorry the wait is so long, but they will be able to help pinpoint your efforts and zero in on the fix. I hope you are feeling much better soon. BTW, RA is known for causing weight loss. Inflammation in the gut is probably why. You aren't absorbing your nutrients. Diet to heal the gut is key. While you wait to see the doctor, find the book "The Body Ecology Diet". They do a great job of explaining why the diet heals auto immune disorders. https://www.amazon.com/Body-Ecology-Diet-Recovering-Rebuilding/dp/1401935435/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8
Susan Marshall thank you so much. I will definitely order and read.
