Has anyone had a Lobectomy, without biopsy first, only to find out that it was not cancer?

Sounds like a horrible story. I'm sorry

It had not happened to me, but I have read about it yet. I have had no biopsy and am waiting on a surgery date. So nervous!

Carol Connor 3 years

I didn't have biopsy and had an upper right lobe removed. It was cancer. The tumor had to come out either way, as it was blocking my bronchial tube.

Lori Ferreira
L

lori my tumor is in my bronchial tube in taking chemo bow to shrink it some to get better cancer markers for operation. Did ok have sleeve resection where they reattached your bronchial tube???

Rodney Reyna 3 years

I don't think so. They just stapled the lung and removed it. I really don't know much more than that.

Lori Ferreira 3 years

My grandmother did. But that was a long time ago before medicine had become more advanced.

Dianne Gibbons

My Dr. And I had discussed this. I was hoping up to the day of surgery it would happen. But, I think they already know going in.

Robin Redmond
R

My doctors all seem convinced, too, robin. There was never even a discussion about biopsying.

Carol Connor 3 years

How are you feeling twin?

Robin Redmond 3 years

Robin Redmond just kind of anxious, but physically fine now!

Carol Connor 3 years

I had double lung cancer.
They only did a biopsy on the left side, because it was larger and it showed up on pet scan.
The tumor on the right side did not light up, it was my choice to watch it or take it out.
I wanted it out, I felt it didn't belong there and it was a tumor.
They did a wedge resection and it turned out to be cancer.

Diann Starks

If it didn't show up, how did they know it was there?

Robin Redmond 3 years

My golf ball size tumor didn't show up on the pet scan. That is why I was told probably not cancer.

Lori Ferreira 3 years

Robin Redmond it showed up in the x ray and ct scan. It didn't show up in the pet scan. So they said they were almost sure no Cancer. But it was!!

Diann Starks 3 years

Oh wow. I did not know it would not show up. Now I am freaking out a bit.

Robin Redmond 3 years

Robin Redmond me Either

Diann Starks 3 years

Yes I have had bladder cancer so when the lung lit up they were sure it was cancer did a wedge resection found out it was just an infection

Ken Rosa
K

Wow ken , I learn something new all the time here.

Diann Starks 3 years

Yeah the bad thing is two years later I did get lung cancer and it was scar carcinoma cause from the previous surgery

Ken Rosa 3 years

I am so sorry that happened to you, ken!

Carol Connor 3 years

WTF!

Robin Redmond 3 years

Ken Rosa what is scar carcinoma?

My husband's surgery was set up that they did a wedge section and while he was under it was diagnosed as cancer, then proceeded to remove the entire lobe and lymph nodes. The Doctors believed it was cancer before the surgery.

Steve Hull

My Thoracic Surgeon is planning on first going in through my chest/throat and biopsying lymph nodes, while I am still under. He said if they are cancerous, they will close me back up, and start a different approach to treatment.

Carol Connor 3 years

I had bilateral lung 'c'... Was told by thoracic doc he would remove 'c' tumor from lower left lung... 3 days later, I was told he had 2 remove entire left lung !!! Imagine my shock but I believe he saved my life !!! I had a different 'c' in right lung.

Deborah Todd

Wow, deborah! How are you feeling now?

Carol Connor 3 years

carol, I'm happy 2 say I'm doing great!!! It's been a horrid journey... Recovery was very painful & complicated because doc nicked my spleen causing internal bleeding & blood clots. Today is wot matters & my new normal, take it slow !!!

Deborah Todd 3 years

Deborah Todd, I am already taking it slow. After 5 months of being treated for Chronic Bronchitis and Pneumonia ( which is how my lung cancer was discovered) including one hospitalization, I am ready for a "new normal".

Carol Connor 3 years

Too ironic... I had pneumonia January 2014, again, 2015... Bronchitis 11/27/15... That's how my 'c' was discovered !!! Chest xray in December 2015 !!!

Deborah Todd 3 years

I had a wedge section surgery they said it was not cancer, three weeks later I get a call saying it is cancer and they have to take the rest of the lung. So the next week had another surgery to remove my lung.

renee, how r u doing now? How long ago was ur procedure? Mine, 2/4/16. Been a battle but doing well these dayzzz!!!

Deborah Todd 3 years

I am so sorry, renee!

Carol Connor 3 years

2/4/16 and 3/4/16. I have a lot of nerve damage, but doctor told me that it's normal for cutting in the same area twice that close together. I have good days, but now and then I have bad days.

Renee Eldridge 3 years

It fine, I get upset when I have to call in to work. My boss gave me so much crap for missing work

Renee Eldridge 3 years

Wow renee, we had surgery same day, 2/4/16 !!! Shameful ur boss gives u a hard time !!! My goodness. My doc tells me pain from nerve damage may never go away. Look forward 2 medical cannabis next year !!!

No I had biopsy first then lobectomy

Janice Christie
J

I may call my Oncologist on Monday and speak to him about that. I only met him briefly while I was in hospital. I guess I just want more information before undergoing major surgery.

Carol Connor 3 years

I would definitely ask before such a procedure to have a lobectomy for no reason is scary

Janice Christie 3 years

Janice Christie, I agree! It's my body and I would like more information before going through such surgery.

Carol Connor 3 years

My surgery to have segment of lobe removed is next week. Cancer has not been confirmed yet but two doctors I trust told me to "presume" it is cancer. It lit up on PET scan.

Best of luck to you.

I have a Lung Resection surgery coming up on the 23rd Oct.... Have had 7 CT Scans, Bronchoscopy, Needle Biopsy and still no diagnosis.... This will be their final attempt to diagnose the masses in my lungs that have been growing for almost a year!

Trish Hodges
T

Wow! Do they say what the problem is? Best of luck to you.

Robin Redmond 3 years

Robin Redmond The problem is that I have masses which continue to grow in both lungs.... They have tested me for all lung and lung related disease and are still stumped!.... They actually told me they consider me a "medical anomally".... Lol!

Trish Hodges 3 years

biopsies have all come back "inconclusive"

Trish Hodges 3 years

Damn, I honestly don't know what to say, but I wish you the best of luck

Robin Redmond 3 years

Robin Redmond Thank you for your concern.... I am just as baffled as they are.... Scared but thinking positive for a good outcome. I will post after surgery is done!.... Prayers are welcome!

My grandmother went thur (I know we are not talking Lung cancer) but cancer none the less... Colon cancer surgery. (was 87 & young for her age no joke) came thur it with flying colors. I helped get her established in rehab & assisted living. She was over the moon. Took her for her one yr. Colonoscopy they said they found cancer near her rectom (on the inside though) and would maybe have to have an illostomy bag after removel. Thus in itself devastated her. Well she had the surgery got septic reverted back to a little child all the while right afterwards they told me she didn't even have cancer it wasn't cancer again. My grandmother died 6 weeks later. It was horrible. Had she said I'd settle for quantity & quality of life (there's of course a difference) usually a person only gets to pick one... I woulda had my sweethearted matriarch possibly for a few more years. So absolutely it happens in every kind of cancer!

I had my first lobectomy without a biopsy first, but one was performed while I was on the table before he removed the lobe.
