My mom got diagnosed with lung cancer last week and doesn't have insurance. Does anyone know if there are any organizations that will help with costs? She needs a pet scan and they're telling her 1800 out of pocket for it. She only has 1000 to her name.

Hospitals can do low income. Go and fill out some papers there. You can make payments too. Best of luck and prayers.
Can she get medicaid. I read somewhere if she is diagnosed with lung cancer it is automatic medicaid.. NOT SURE but google it.
Contact the patient advocate in your hospital.
If she only has $1,000 in assets / income she should apply for Medicaid and / or assistance from the the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) -- and most US Public Hospitals, also have Free Care for those who are low income, but that's only a last resort, if they are not eligible for any State/Government programs. Talk to a Social Service person at the hospital where she is seeking care -- they should be able to guide you. She also should probably apply for Social Security Disability (for income) is she worked enough to be eligible! Good Luck....
Even if she did not work and does not have enough work credits with little assets she should get SSI- Welfare and medicaid comes with it.
She makes 1000 a year too much in Florida you can't make more than 11,000 a year and she makes 12,000 on ssi. She also tried disability but she was a stay at home mom for years so she didn't pay enough into the system. She's 9 months off from getting Medicare. This is a messed up world we live in
This makes me so mad. So very angry.
Look into pooled trust. Some states allow you to move the overpayment which medicaid would normally take to a pooled trust. From the pooled trust you can declare deductions as long as you use it for home related expenses.
Try the American Cancer Society they should know of resources.
It also ticks me off that our healthcare is ridiculously over priced. Everyone deserves proper care. Keep making calls.
I agree. She had insurance last year but it went up 800 for this year so she couldn't keep it. I'm so disappointed in our country
Im so sorry, but don't up. There are answers and help for your Mom. I also wouldn't fork over the last of her saved money.
Yes, It's dreadful there is not more offered and that even when you have insurance there are so many things not covered (larger deductibles, co pays and so on)... We need better options for ALL.....
My dad didn't have insurance for 6 months and was never denied treatment. Hospital systems usually have indigent care programs, and drug makers will often cover the chemo costs for non insured. She may end up with significant debt, but as long as you pay something, even a little, they don't usually hassle you.
^ exactly. I hope you find options but if you don't, do what I do - send them $5 or $10 a month to show good faith. So sorry you're going through this
I worked with the financial office at my hospital... I've done several financial statements but have had nearly all my bills paid. There are funds set aside for uninsured. Also, try disability and SSI and medicaid.
If she is on SSI doesnt she automatically qualify for MedicAid?
Not sure how all that works... I was denied for all of them. Too young.
You can get SSI Disability for long term or critical health condition.
IF NOT allowed please delete. Here is the link.. İt was not ss but info from a lawyers page. http://www.disabilitysecrets.com/resources/social-security-disability-coverage/benefits-lung-cancer.htm#
She is on SSI and did not work enough to be eligible for SSD...!
lisa did I miss something? If she is disabled she should have gotten medicaid.. That is what happened to me. My Dad had a stroke, took care of him for 8 yrs and I did not know about these work credits.. I got slapped on medicaid after being labeled disabled. I believe low income getting ssi gets medicaid. Anyway.. Being on medicaid in florida with amerigroup is the ticket to Moffitt's in Tampa for cancer treatment.
kris That's what I thought too, but I read the post above from her daughter - rachel -- She makes 1000 a year too much in Florida you can't make more than 11,000 a year and she makes 12,000 on ssi. She also tried disability but she was a stay at home mom for years so she didn't pay enough into the system. She's 9 months off from getting Medicare. This is a messed up world we live in.."
Lisa Navarro sorry I missed that second post..
Kris Oneal No worries !! -- I am confused too and thought anyone on SSI would be Medicaid eligible or at least eligible for Obamacare -- Seems crazy to me that she is not eligible for either - very sad
Nonprofit hospitals maintain. Their nonprofit status by giving back to the community. Treating uninsured people is part of that. The people who say that you need that money are the people whose jobs are to collect money. Generally, if you say that you don't have that money they won't refuse treatment.
Have her call he Congressman and Senator. They all have constituent services. See if they have any suggestions.
Maybe a church, they help alot of people in Texas
Florida (winter park) Hospital cancer center phone number is 2100 Glenwood Dr (407) 646-7777
you would come straight down 50 to 436 to Aloma Ave to Glenwood.
We aren't far from there. Will they help? I will call them tomorrow
Rachel Sowers this is the first cancer center his pulmonary dr sent him to last week for a consult. We have a radiologist appt here too. Florida hospital should help you with no insurance. We go to Moffit's next week for a second opinion. IF they are recommending the same thing we will opt to go to this location.
Rachel Sowers I am not sure what hospitals are in brevard county but let me ask my friend who is a nurse and see what she says. She lives off of us1 and 95
Were in Titusville too. The two closest hospitals won't help. We don't mind driving to someone that will help
Rachel Sowers I am also looking for MD anderson in orlando.. My friends sister was an oncology nurse there and their mother had lung cancer.. Cured in two treatments with a new drug. She knew WHO to contact of course.
My brother had the same problem they can't Deny you treatment
probably not but they can send you a bill.. And at that point let them build up and then claim medical bankruptcy. NO ONE should be denied medical care.... İts just dealing with bills after....
She needs the pet scan to finish the diagnosis. All she has had is the biopsy. They know she has a ping pong sized tumor on her left lung and a small spot on her right but they don't know if it's spread yet.
Even though Florida didn't take expanded Medicaid, it sounds as if your Mom would be eligible anyway. It won't hurt to apply.
Medicaid would be your best place to start.
