Is it from pain meds?

Michelle Dobson
M

She’s on an steroid for her head and a nurse came today for an evaluation and said one of her pain meds causes constipation. We have her taking 3 different stool softeners and nothing has happened. Also an enema and suppository yesterday.

Beth Choi 3 years

Yes, pain meds often do cause constipation. They slow down the smooth muscles that move things along in the GI tract.

Michelle Dobson she’s on pain meds around the clock

Have you tried prune juice? Any reason Miralax would not be appropriate?

Michelle Dobson
M

Tomorrow we are trying miralax as last resort. She doesn’t wanna go back to hospital but it’s a week today.

Beth Choi 3 years

Def want to get on top of it - sooner than later. Miralax should get things moving. Is she staying hydrated?

Michelle Dobson 3 years

Michelle Dobson yes drinking lots

Beth Choi 3 years

Make sure if she's drinking a lot - that she's also getting electrolytes. Don't want those out of balance. But sounds like you're doing right things.

Michelle Dobson 3 years

Michelle Dobson she’s been drinking water and Gatorade

She drank this whole bottle yesterday and nothing

I would notify her doctor as soon as they open. Try a hearing pad on her belly. That's sometimes will relieve internal swelling.

I use miralax daily and it is safe. During chemo I might take 2 doses daily and add a stimulant laxative as needed. If that doesn't work move to enemas or suppositories, and citrate of magnesium, in addition to increasing the dose of the laxatives. Be careful not to overdue as the miralaxx can take 48 hours to work and if you take to much you end up with the other problem. There is a poop protocol avàilable on one of the self help sites. Nurses should hand those out with chemo info packet. It was very helpful. Bottom line is you can expect to have either constipation, diarrhea or both in response to chemo so have a supply of meds ready. Step up the meds for each day you haven't gone. I've read about natural remedies and prune juice or lemon is great for average irregularity, but with chemo and pain meds we need a protocol to follow so you don't end up in the emergency room with a blockage. The protocol steps up in doses and meds with each passing day without a bowel movement. If it has been 5 days without, you should call your doctor and consider seriously a trip to the emergency room to solve an impaction. A perforated bowel and resulting infection can be deadly for those of us on chemo drugs. I need one of those poop emojis for this.. Good luck.

Pain meds will do it. Dulcolax will just help not going on the other way with diarrhea

I am a huge fan of Benefil. I mix it in with food and drink as it dissolves and does not change the taste.

Dr gave my husband a prescription of Miramax and ins pays 100%. He takes it daily, and it works for him. May take a little while to start working, so keep going. Good luck.

If nothing is working I’m afraid the problem may be more complex than just a stubborn bowel movement

That’s cabbage

Marcia Lim 3 years

Marcia Lim that is fermented cabbage to be precise. If it's just cooked it may even bloat and wouldn't have a laxative effect.

Miralax+stool softner+prune juice everyday!!! If that doesn't do the trick glycerin suppositories!

My sister used relistor. It is given by injection every other day. Basically it makes opioids - the likely source of constipation - not work in the gut. So it kills pain elsewhere but doesn't slow down the gut. It really helped my sister.
