Any recommendations for how to deal with a serious flare of rheumatoid arthritis?

Friends, I am having my first serious flare since being diagnosed and being put on meds. Finished prednisone 2 days ago and haven't felt this bad in a couple of months. Please- any recommendations for how to deal with this immediately?

Sometimes Epsom salt bath will help relax you. Remove as much stress as you can. Hope this helps!

I'm on it now. What was your experience with it? I maybe take one a day.

Melanie Scott 3 years

No I only take when I need never had a problem with it I don't use everyday

I'm in the same boat as you. My initial flare up in October was really, really bad. Took medrol and as soon as I got to the last day, I could feel it creeping in again. I go back and forth now between pain i can "kind of tolerate" and pain that literally knocks me on my butt. And god forbid I try to get anything done around the house on a good day... İ pay for it. I won't take narcotics for pain, so tramadol isn't even an option for me, personally. Are you on other meds?

I'm on methotrexate and I take turmeric, fish oil, and probiotics. I don't know if I can take NSAIDs with methotrexate, etc. I can't wait to get home and try the Epsom salt bath.

Victoria Spangler 3 years

yes, you can take other NSAIDs with methotrexate...i think you can take celebrex, ibuprofen and naproxen. Honestly, the OTC NSAIDs don't seem to help me very much (maybe they do help, but I can't really tell a lessening of pain).

Colleen Parham 3 years

and have some rest too maybe you did a vigorous work sometimes our body need some rest as well. İt happened to me

I take Celebrex and Percocet with methotrexate and geletin

Are you following an RA diet? İf not do it.

I am just about to, I wanted to get off of the prednisone first. This is definitely my next step.

My doctor prescribed duex has a coating for stomach ( ibuprofen 800) that really helps because it's anti inflammatory. Termidol just made me constipated and didn't help at all.

Does it help?

Victoria Spangler 3 years

that's what my PCP gave me when I was first diagnosed. It didn't help me very much either. I think I'm trying the diet next, for sure.

Colleen Parham 3 years

It helped more than the termidol

Elena Malone 3 years

Yes diet is very important

Get in a hot tube. Also a heating pad helps. Good luck

I have read from several sources that fasting will eliminate the pain faster than anything short of more meds, which are destroying the gut, which causes the inflammation in the first place. It's a vicious circle. Fasting will stop putting anything into your leaky gut - that is the theory. You might google this for more specific information.

Let us know what you decide to do. I am at the same crossroads. I am finishing prednisone this week.

I just got a call from my doctor, she wants me to back on prednisone for another 2 months. I'm not thrilled about this, the prednisone did help but my appetite was crazy and my skin broke out. I think I'm going to forego the steroids and work on the diet- I have a follow up at the end of May. I'll see how I do with dietary and the DMARD. If it gets debilitating, I may reconsider but I'm really wanting less chemicals if possible. Such a bummer.

What dose of prednisone are you on? I had a really hard time coming off of them, but after a few days it was tolerable. The first few days are the hardest from what I've learned. I take turmeric (Gaia brand) twice a day and it has helped with pain and inflammation.

Melanie Scott 3 years

I started on 40 mg and weaned down to 5 and just finished three days ago. I was wondering if this was an adjustment of getting them out of my system. Is that similar to what happened with you?

Victoria Spangler 3 years

Melanie Scott my mom is so nasty when she's weaning off of prednisone. She isn't normally like that but I hate when she is cycling off them. She has now developed BOOP after 40 years with RA so she literally has NO choice but to cycle on and off prednisone or she can't breathe. It certainly is a vicious cycle

Victoria Spangler I felt good when I was on prednisone. Didn't have many side effects, but once I went off it, it was so hard. I felt pretty awful. I won't take them again because of that. I do think the numeric is helping and I'm trying to eat better and cut out gluten and most sugar.

Water fasting will end the flare. A hot bath in Epsom salts or Mag salts work baking soda will also help.

Only water? For how long?

Victoria Spangler 3 years

Any time I've done it it takes about a day. It's not fun but it works. Drinking celery cucumber juice would help, too.

Caprice Meier 3 years

Epsom salt bath tonight !!!

Prednisone makes the root case of RA worse. NSAIDS as well.

Water fasting - then ease into raw vegtables, white basmati rice, sweet potato....

Gosh, my dr refused to give me prednisone. The only good thing about the man I suppose. He said it does more harm than good. Told me to take motrin or tylenol. I also have mobic but haven't used it.

Amy Bruno

motrin is terrible as well. Exacerbates leaky gut.

Kristine Gilliam 3 years

Yes, I don't take any of it unless Im in a lot of pain.

STOP EATING, FAST. FAST. FAST. Its the only thing that works for me
24-72 hour fast. Just water.
